  2. 5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Travels

There is a well-known quote in the travel world that says: “travelling is the only thing you buy that makes you richer”. It sounds painfully cliché but it really is true. People that travel have their eyes opened to new cultures and develop an appreciation for just how incredible and diverse the world is.

But, there is a technique to travelling. A technique that will turn you into a super savvy traveller who makes the most of every second you are abroad. If you want to learn how to make your travels as amazing as possible and have the richest of experiences then check out these handy tips and you’ll be travelling like a pro in no time.

    Say Yes to Everything

It’s another massive cliché but you never regret the things you do, only the things you wish you’d done. So, unless you have a really good reason for saying no to something, you should always be saying yes. Some of the best experiences you will have on your travels will occur when you threw caution to the wind and said yes to something completely spontaneous.

    Talk to People

There are a number of reasons why you should talk to people while you travel. Firstly, people who travel invariably have a few good stories to tell, so purely from an entertainment perspective they are worth conversing with. Secondly, they might have been to places you are planning on visiting. If this is the case they may well have some valuable information that could end up changing your itinerary. They might tell you that a temple you are dying to see is actually closed to the public or that a museum you were going to skip is really worth checking out. You might end up having a far better time because you took a stranger’s advice.

    Embrace the Weird and Wonderful

When you are abroad you can feel a bit out of your comfort zone at times. The language might be different, the food could be a bit obscure or there might be certain local customs that you just cannot get your head around. Rather than letting these differences bother you, open your mind and embrace them as whole-heartedly as you can. You might feel silly joining in with a traditional ceremonial dance but if you let go of your inhibitions and do it, you’ll have a much better experience. It’s these strange features that make a country unique and create the best memories.

    Learn the Language

You don’t have to become completely proficient in Portuguese just because you want to visit Brazil. However, if you can pick up a few basic phrases – or even just ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ – then you will have a much smoother vacation. As English speakers we have it very easy when we travel. English is the universal language and everyone speaks it so why would we bother learning any other language? The truth is that speaking to someone in their native tongue is a sure-fire way to win them over – and this could really come in handy while you travel.

    Keep a Journal

Writing in a diary might seem a bit childish but it is a really good way to capture your experience abroad. You don’t need to write pages upon pages every day detailing every single thing that happened. Simply jot down what you did and how you felt at the end of each day. In years to come you will look back at what you wrote and your words will bring back vivid memories. You can even use it to bore your kids and grandkids one day.

  3. Art Basel Miami

Art Basel started up back in the 1970s when three enthusiastic gallerists put on an international art fair in Basel, Switzerland. Around 16,000 people turned up to admire dozens of galleries and the entire affair was a roaring success. Since then the Art Basel fairs have gone from strength to strength and are now held in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami every year.

The purpose of Art Basel is to give credit to art galleries by recognising the role they play in supporting and nurturing the careers of artists. The shows provide galleries with the opportunity to showcase some of their most prominent masterpieces.

This year’s Miami offering of Art Basel will take place between December 7th and 10th and will be held in the Miami Beach Convention Centre. The galleries that will be exhibiting at this fair hail from all over the world and will be bringing with them some of their best modern and contemporary artworks.

During the fair, the main exhibition hall will be jam-packed with incredible pieces of art, including sculptures, paintings and photographs. Meanwhile, the landscape outdoors will be decorated with yet more installations – particularly those of a larger scale.

The show will be divided up into different sectors to make navigating the mass of artwork slightly easier. The main sector is called “Galleries”. Here, you will find leading international modern and contemporary galleries displaying art in all manners and formats. The pieces on show will range from debut works from young artists to masterpieces fit to be hung in a museum.

The next sector worth noting is “Nova”. This sector is all about embracing the new. Nova will feature select galleries presenting just a couple of artists – or even just one – whose work has been created in the past three years. Some of the pieces will never have been seen outside of the studio before.

Moving on you will find“Kabinett”, an interesting space where galleries can showcase a whole exhibition by an artist of their choice. This provides excellent curatorial possibilities and can carve the way for rising stars in the art world.

Another sector making up Art Basel Miami is the “Survey” sector, which will showcase historical projects. The works on show will span a range of cultures, generations and themes and will come from a variety of artistic approaches.

If you are planning on visiting the Art Basel Miami show with kids then you will be thrilled to know that your little ones will be well looked after whilst there. There is a free kindergarten on site where parents can leave their children while they wander around the show. The professionals in charge of the kindergarten will engage your child in all kinds of fun arty activities with the aim of bringing out their creative side.

Those really looking to make the most of their visit to the art fair should consider taking a guided tour with one of the resident experts. The guides can give you information about the artwork and answer any questions you might have regarding what you can see. Art tours are available throughout the day in a variety of different languages.

If you’ve got an artistic streak and want to escape to the sunshine of Miami Beach this winter then Art Basel Miami is the ideal event for your calendar.

  4. Top 5 Travel Apps

Gone are the days of paper maps and phoning places to make reservations. Nowadays, everything is done over the Internet. While some lament the loss of tradition, the advent of this new technology has made travelling easier than ever before. Virtually everything you need to plan or research can be done from a handheld device, whether this be a tablet or smartphone.

Fortunately, technology has made it even easier for us to get stuff done on the go by creating apps that streamline the procedure. No need to even search for anything in Google. Just open the app and away you go. After spending a long time on the road, you quickly learn to depend on these handy apps. Here are five that should be on the smartphone of every savvy traveller.

    Uber

Available in over 80 different countries, Uber is a travel essential as far as I’m concerned. Once you have connected your credit card to the app, you can order a taxi with just a few taps and you don’t need to worry about whether you have cash on you or not. This is great for a number of different reasons. The most important being that if you are in a new city you probably won’t have got to grips with the local public transport. An Uber will make sure you get to A to B safely and you won’t have to faff around with all that foreign currency either.

    Hotel Tonight

If you like to add a bit of luxury to your travel every now and then then you should really consider downloading Hotel Tonight. The app is a dumping ground for unused rooms in fancy hotels. You can only book a room up to a week in advance but you will find some incredible discounts on there. Imagine shacking up in a five star hotel for the same price as a bunk bed in a hostel.

    Maps.Me

Navigating a new city is often a challenge and as I mentioned before, the days of the paper map are long gone. Unfortunately, being abroad often means not having data readily available on your device. But, maps.me can help. You will need an Internet connection very briefly in order to download the map of whichever city you are in. Once you have it, you will be able to use it without data as you wander around your destination. This is far easier than dipping in to every McDonalds you see to try and steal their WiFi connection.

    Booking.com

The Booking.com app is an absolute must for backpackers or people on extended trips. Not only does it allow you to easily compare and book accommodation, but it also stores all of your reservations for you in one place for easy reference. Once you’ve booked your hotel, simply go into the app whenever you need and remind yourself of the details – you don’t even need data to do this. The app also stores an address and phone number, which you can give to a taxi driver if you get lost on the way there.

    Skyscanner

If you need flights then Skyscanner should be your go to website. Their app allows you to easily compare flights from hundreds of different airlines to find the best deal. They also allow you to be flexible with your dates to make it even easier to get cheap flights. The range of searching options and filters are excellent and you can even save your searches if you fly the same route regularly for work. Bear in mind that some smaller or budget airlines won’t appear on Skyscanner so you might want to cross-reference with other sites, such as Kayak.

  5. Top 5 Non-Capital Asian Cities

When travelling abroad, most people will usually start their journeys in capital cities. It makes sense. The airport is there, there is always lots to do and see and you can always find somewhere good to eat. But, capital cities are often just a tiny snippet of what a country has to offer. There is often just as much, if not more, excitement to be had in non-capital cities as there is in capitals.

If you’re ready to leave the chaos of the capitals behind and embark on a bit of an adventure then take a look at the following list of non-capital Asian cities and prepare to be inspired.

    Chiang Mai, Thailand

Imagine the exact opposite of Bangkok and you might start to get an idea of what Chiang Mai is like. Quiet, peaceful and filled with gleaming temples, Chiang Mai is the perfect retreat for weary travellers. Here you will be able to spend your days strolling through the streets, taking in the sights and sounds at your own leisurely pace. In the evenings there are plenty of bars with live music where you can while away some hours away before heading back to your hotel.

    Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City feels like a capital – especially when compared with Hanoi, the current capital of Vietnam. This is mainly because it was the capital of Vietnam for a while before it was usurped by Hanoi. Nevertheless, Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon as it is also known) is a vibrant metropolis that will give you a great insight into modern Vietnamese culture. Be sure to take a trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels while you’re there and pay a visit to the War Remnants Museum for a bit of historical context to the city.

    Kandy, Sri Lanka

Infinitely better than the sprawling mess that is Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, Kandy is by far the best city in Sri Lanka. Its number one attraction is the Temple of the Tooth, which has gained international fame for being reputed to contain within it a relic of the tooth of Buddha. However, there is plenty more here than just the temple. Visitors can spend their time picking out beautiful fabrics in the local markets or strolling around the sparkling Kandy Lake.

    Mumbai, India

A complete world away from New Delhi – the capital of India – Mumbai is a slice of modernity in an otherwise traditional and spiritual country. While tuk tuks still whizz along the roads at quite an alarming speed, the chaos in Mumbai seems much more manageable than that of other large Indian cities. Home to the Bombay Stock Exchange, dozens of silver stores and a rocky coastline, your trip to India would incomplete without spending some time in Mumbai.

    Shanghai, China

Nowhere in the world is as crazy as Shanghai. With 25 million people it is the most populous city in the world and the second you get there you will feel its unique energy. Highlights of this Chinese megacity are the Shanghai Tower, the Yu Garden and the Pudong skyline. The Bund is also a place worth visiting as it sits along the waterfront of the city and is generally considered to be the heart of Shanghai.

  6. Top 5 Non-Capital European Cities

Travelling through Europe is all about capital cities. Whether it’s Paris, Rome, Prague or London, European capitals are the heart of their respective countries. They are where all the action is and are the cradle of the nation’s culture and history.

It is very easy to visit a country in Europe and completely forget that there are other cities outside of the capital. But, you would be surprised just how much beauty and excitement can be found in some of the non-capital European cities. Hop on a train or a bus for a few hours and head out of the capital. You might just be amazed at what you find.

To start you off and inspire you, here are our top 5 favourite non-capital cities.

    Cambridge, England

When tourists travel to England, they tend to beeline straight to London – and understandably so. It’s certainly one of the most exciting cities in Europe. But, there is a lot more to England than its chaotic capital.

The highlight of visiting Cambridge is seeing its prestigious university, which travellers can visit and admire as they wander through the city. The best way to see the colleges of Cambridge University is to hop in a punt (a long flat boat that gets pushed along the water with a big stick) and take a tour along the river. Once that’s done, hit the cobbled streets in search of some gourmet food in one of the city’s numerous cafés and bistros.

    Munich, Germany

Completely different to Berlin, Munich is more what you would expect from a German city. The most populous city in Bavaria, one of Germany’s states, Munich is teeming with impressive buildings and boasts a rich history.

Every year, in October, Munich takes the global spotlight thanks to its Oktoberfest beer festival – one of the most popular festival in Europe. Beer halls throw open their doors to tourists and locals alike as hordes of people gather together to enjoy Bavaria’s finest beers. Yet, Munich isn’t just about beer. Surrounded by mountains and forests, there is plenty of natural beauty to soak up here as well.

    Venice, Italy

Venice is often described as being the most beautiful city in Europe. You’ll have to see whether or not you agree when you travel there. Regardless of how you rate it, there is no denying that Venice exudes a certain charm that just doesn’t exist in other cities. The main attraction of Venice, as you probably know, is its winding canals that snake through the city. Here, gondoliers ply their tourist-filled gondolas through the water, under gorgeous bridges and past striking buildings. To complete your Venice experience, grab yourself a gelato once you disembark from your boat. Perfection.

    Barcelona, Spain

Everything about Barcelona is amazing. The people are chilled out and friendly, the food is incredible and the beaches are top notch. If you’re looking for a non-capital city break then there are definitely worse places in Europe you could choose. Spend your days here gorging on tapas or getting a culture fix by visiting the Gaudí museum or the Sagrada Familia. As the sun starts to set, order a jug of sangria and drink al fresco at one of the city’s trendy bars.

    Zadar, Croatia

Zadar isn’t a city that usually appears on people’s to do lists when they visit Croatia. Often over shadowed by Split and Dubrovnik, this amazing city definitely doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. In the city centre the streets are paved with huge slabs of white stone. This is an aesthetic that does the city well. Wonder out of the main zone and head over to the pier. Here, you will be able to listen to the dulcet music of the sea organ as you watch the sun set on the horizon. Beautiful and magical, Zadar is worthy a spot on your itinerary.

  8. Top 4 Alternative Natural Wonders of the World

You will find a hundred different articles online that will tell you about the seven natural wonders of the world. These include the Great Barrier Reef in Australia; the Grand Canyon in the USA; and Victoria Falls, which sits on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe; among others.

While there is no denying that these sites are astounding, the crowds that flock there on a daily basis somewhat spoil the magic a bit. But, don’t let that put you off getting out in the world and seeing what’s on offer. We have put together an alternative list of natural world wonders that are every bit as remarkable as the standard big hitters but are guaranteed to feature far fewer tourists.

    Semuc Champey, Guatemala

Nestled in the Guatemalan jungle is Semuc Champey, a natural wonder unlike anything you’ve seen before. The main feature of this site is the staggered pools that cut through the trees in a line. Filled with crystal clear water, the pools flow down from one into another and are perfect for splashing around in. Once you’ve spent some time in the pools, be sure to hike up to the look-out point for a spectacular view of the entire park. Alternatively, book yourself on to a tour and spend some of your day exploring the mysterious caves.

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, Madagascar

This national park is certainly the pride and joy of Madagascar and one of the most fascinating places on the planet but it isn’t easy to get there. Nonetheless, those who do venture here will be richly rewarded. The UNESCO site comprises thousands of limestone towers that have been shaped from millennia of wind and water, as well as caves, canyons and a huge array of endemic and exotic animals. Utterly unique and breath-taking in every way, the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park deserves a place on every traveller’s bucket list.

    Plitvice National Park, Croatia

If you’re a fan of water, whether it’s static on the ground or tumbling down the face of a cliff, the Plitvice National Park has got you covered. The pools are an impossible shade of turquoise and the boardwalks that take you through the park make the experience truly magical. If walking through the park isn’t enough for you, there is a way to get really up close and personal with the water: hire a boat. There are a number of rowboats available for rental by the hour so why not take advantage of the offer and float around on the serene lakes for a while.

    Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

The Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, stretching out over a staggering 4,000 square miles. Particular sites of interest within this remarkable salty desert include a salt hotel and the Isla del Pescado (Fish Island), which is a patch of wild cactuses growing right in the middle of the salt flat. Be sure to take some props with you when you go as one of the best things about a trip to the salar is getting to take groovy perspective photos. Toy dinosaurs and Pringles cans are always a favourite!

  9. Best Budget Airlines for Service

Budget airlines have been key in opening up the world and allowing more people to travel. No longer the exclusive privilege of the wealthy, travelling is becoming more and more mainstream, which in turn is causing increasing numbers or these budget airlines to pop up around the world. A virtuous circle is thus created.

However, while flying with a budget airline can save you a significant chunk of cash, cheap flights still come with a price. Unlike the more luxurious airlines, those who cater to a budget traveller have become notorious for their poor or complete lack of customer service. Indeed, crew members tend to wear an “I don’t get paid enough to deal with this” look on their face at all times.

But, it would be unfair of me to paint all budget airlines with the same brush. There are indeed some who cater well to their passengers despite their low-priced tickets. Take a look and see which budget airlines out there still treat you like a VIP.

    WestJet

Canadians are known for their friendly demeanour and their cabin crew members are no exception. With astonishingly cheap prices (less than US $250 for a flight from London to Vancouver), you would expect the service to be sub-par but this isn’t the case at all. Staff are very willing to go out of their way to accommodate your needs and are even happy to bend the rules a bit if it leads to better customer satisfaction.

    Viva Colombia

Viva Colombia is owned by low-cost giant Ryanair, but unlike their European parent this airline actually has a pretty good customer service record. Although the airline makes you pay to have an allocated seat, the cabin crew don’t seem to mind at all when passengers mix and match seats once on the plane to avoid the charge. They also have a fantastic call centre with employees who deal with issues incredibly efficiently.

    Air Asia

The thing that makes Air Asia stand out above all other budget airlines is its Red Lounge in the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2. For $20 passengers can use the lounge for up to 3 hours. Once inside, there are showers, refreshment tables and some comfy seating areas where you while away the time before your flight. If you happen to have a connection here then it really is an absolute godsend.

    EasyJet

EasyJet is an all rounder when it comes to service. Passengers often praise the airline for having a smooth and easy check in followed by a warm welcome once you board the plane. Cabin crew are generally both efficient and friendly, a useful combination for putting nervous fliers at ease and making sure everyone has an enjoyable trip. The captain even thanks everyone at the end for choosing EasyJet, which is a nice touch.

    Norwegian

This airline has soared into the limelight over the past few years thanks to its fantastically cheap transatlantic flights. But, does the service match the sublime pricing? The answer is yes. The staff offer passengers a high level of personal attention – particularly those who don’t feel very comfortable on planes. Overall, people who have travelled with Norwegian say they would definitely do it again.

  10. Top 4 Autumn European City Breaks

As the days begin to cool down and night starts creeping in earlier and earlier each day, it is time to say goodbye to summer and embrace autumn. This means that kids are back in school; leaves are starting to turn brown and it’s going to be at least 9 months until we see the sun again.

It might feel like once summer has passed there is nothing to look forward to until Christmas but this doesn’t have to be the case. In fact, autumn can be the perfect time for a European city break. There will be fewer crowds, cheaper accommodation and plenty of fun to be had but the weather won’t be so bad that you will have to spend the whole time inside. A brisk chill is actually preferable to intense heat in some cases.

So, which European cities are perfect for an Autumn getaway? We have a few favourites that are perfect for visiting once the heat of summer has subsided and the streets are a little emptier. Read on to find check out our suggestions.

    Amsterdam

Amsterdam is beautiful whenever you go but there is something about this city in autumn that is truly magical. As the leaves turn red and fall alongside the canals, this Dutch gem becomes one of the most picturesque places in Europe. Spend your days cycling through the city on a rental bike or strolling through the city centre, stopping off at the numerous galleries and museums as you go. If it gets too chilly then take a break in a café and warm up with some coffee and pancakes.

    Rome

The trouble with Rome in the summer is that it really is unbearably hot. But, what is a sweaty dustbowl in the summer turns into a masterpiece in the autumn. Visiting Rome in autumn means that you will still have delightfully warm weather but you will be able to walk around without being drenched in your own sweat. There will also be far fewer tourists there. You can check out the Coliseum and Pantheon without having to jostle people for space and you won’t need to wait in line to get your daily pasta fix.

    Barcelona

I have never met anyone who hasn’t fallen in love with Barcelona. The people are astonishingly beautiful and the energy of the city is incredible. Planning your city break to Barcelona for autumn means you will still be able to hang out at the beach and eat al fresco but you won’t overheat while you’re at it. Autumn weather here is perfect for warm days checking out the Sagrada Familia and other famous sites and cool evenings sharing a pitcher of Sangria with friends.

    Tallinn

Estonia might not be the first place you would think of to spend your European city break but, believe it or not, Tallinn is well worth a visit. The centre of the capital is contained within the boundaries of a medieval walled city, which features cobbled streets, lined with cute boutiques and cafés. Outside of the walled city are shopping malls, a business district and a quirky Bohemian area that is all colour and creativity. Given its location, visiting Tallinn in the summer can be tiring because the sun virtually never sets. This can make sleeping a bit of a challenge. In autumn this problem is eliminated so you can sleep like a baby and get the most out of your days.
