    Koh Tao, Thailand

    Far from the madness of the Full Moon Party of Koh Phangan, or the party strip on Koh Samui, Koh Tao is an oasis of calm. Just like Utila, Koh Tao is known for its cut-price diving courses. With money you save acquiring your licence, you will be able to do even more diving once you’re qualified. The diving itself in Koh Tao isn’t as beautiful as many other spots but this is where those on a budget or people who have never dived before should start out.

    Blue Hole, Belize

    The Blue Hole brings in scuba divers from all over the world and with good reason. Sitting just off the coast of Belize’s beautiful Caye Caulker and Caye Ambergris, this dive site is a complete natural phenomenon. This site takes divers down to an other-worldly place that is at once beautiful and eery. Sharks roam freely once you get down to a certain depth and the sight of stalactites that date back millennia is truly breath-taking.

    Thistlegorm, Egypt

    Situated in the Red Sea, the Thistlegorm is one of the most famous shipwrecks in these warm, clear waters. Diving here allows intrepid adventurers to explore the wreck and seek out some of its forgotten treasures. Once surrounded by these artefacts it feels like you have been transported back in time and if you use your imagination you might even be able to get an idea of what the ship was like back in its hey day.

    Sipadan Island

    Everyone who knows anything about diving will tell you how amazing the diving on Sipadan Island is. Head over to Barracuda Point and you will find yourself in the middle of a tornado of gleaming barracuda. If you are lucky enough to have an under-water camera then this sight is not to be missed. Equally, the Coral Garden and Drop Off provide yet more stunning photo ops. If you don’t have a camera then just admire the wonder of the sites with your own eyes.     Steeped in history, Easter Island sits in the Pacific Ocean, around 3,500km from mainland Chile. Easter Island is famed for its collection of Moai that can be found all over the island. Moai are the giant stone heads that you have probably seen photos of.     Art Basel started up back in the 1970s when three enthusiastic gallerists put on an international art fair in Basel, Switzerland. Around 16,000 people turned up to admire dozens of galleries and the entire affair was a roaring success. Since then the Art Basel fairs have gone from strength to strength and are now held in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami every year.

    The purpose of Art Basel is to give credit to art galleries by recognising the role they play in supporting and nurturing the careers of artists. The shows provide galleries with the opportunity to showcase some of their most prominent masterpieces.

    This year’s Miami offering of Art Basel will take place between December 7th and 10th and will be held in the Miami Beach Convention Centre. The galleries that will be exhibiting at this fair hail from all over the world and will be bringing with them some of their best modern and contemporary artworks.

    During the fair, the main exhibition hall will be jam-packed with incredible pieces of art, including sculptures, paintings and photographs. Meanwhile, the landscape outdoors will be decorated with yet more installations – particularly those of a larger scale.

    The show will be divided up into different sectors to make navigating the mass of artwork slightly easier. The main sector is called “Galleries”. Here, you will find leading international modern and contemporary galleries displaying art in all manners and formats. The pieces on show will range from debut works from young artists to masterpieces fit to be hung in a museum.

    The next sector worth noting is “Nova”. This sector is all about embracing the new. Nova will feature select galleries presenting just a couple of artists – or even just one – whose work has been created in the past three years. Some of the pieces will never have been seen outside of the studio before.

    Moving on you will find“Kabinett”, an interesting space where galleries can showcase a whole exhibition by an artist of their choice. This provides excellent curatorial possibilities and can carve the way for rising stars in the art world.

    Another sector making up Art Basel Miami is the “Survey” sector, which will showcase historical projects. The works on show will span a range of cultures, generations and themes and will come from a variety of artistic approaches.

    Available in over 80 different countries, Uber is a travel essential as far as I’m concerned. Once you have connected your credit card to the app, you can order a taxi with just a few taps and you don’t need to worry about whether you have cash on you or not. This is great for a number of different reasons. The most important being that if you are in a new city you probably won’t have got to grips with the local public transport. An Uber will make sure you get to A to B safely and you won’t have to faff around with all that foreign currency either.

    Hotel Tonight

    If you like to add a bit of luxury to your travel every now and then then you should really consider downloading Hotel Tonight. The app is a dumping ground for unused rooms in fancy hotels. You can only book a room up to a week in advance but you will find some incredible discounts on there. Imagine shacking up in a five star hotel for the same price as a bunk bed in a hostel.

    Maps.Me

    Navigating a new city is often a challenge and as I mentioned before, the days of the paper map are long gone. Unfortunately, being abroad often means not having data readily available on your device. But, maps.me can help. You will need an Internet connection very briefly in order to download the map of whichever city you are in. Once you have it, you will be able to use it without data as you wander around your destination. This is far easier than dipping in to every McDonalds you see to try and steal their WiFi connection.

    Booking.com

    The Booking.com app is an absolute must for backpackers or people on extended trips. Not only does it allow you to easily compare and book accommodation, but it also stores all of your reservations for you in one place for easy reference. Once you’ve booked your hotel, simply go into the app whenever you need and remind yourself of the details – you don’t even need data to do this. The app also stores an address and phone number, which you can give to a taxi driver if you get lost on the way there.

    Skyscanner

    If you need flights then Skyscanner should be your go to website. Their app allows you to easily compare flights from hundreds of different airlines to find the best deal. They also allow you to be flexible with your dates to make it even easier to get cheap flights. The range of searching options and filters are excellent and you can even save your searches if you fly the same route regularly for work. Bear in mind that some smaller or budget airlines won’t appear on Skyscanner so you might want to cross-reference with other sites, such as Kayak.

    When travelling abroad, most people will usually start their journeys in capital cities. It makes sense. The airport is there, there is always lots to do and see and you can always find somewhere good to eat. But, capital cities are often just a tiny snippet of what a country has to offer. There is often just as much, if not more, excitement to be had in non-capital cities as there is in capitals.

    If you’re ready to leave the chaos of the capitals behind and embark on a bit of an adventure then take a look at the following list of non-capital Asian cities and prepare to be inspired.

    Chiang Mai, Thailand

    Imagine the exact opposite of Bangkok and you might start to get an idea of what Chiang Mai is like. Quiet, peaceful and filled with gleaming temples, Chiang Mai is the perfect retreat for weary travellers. Here you will be able to spend your days strolling through the streets, taking in the sights and sounds at your own leisurely pace. In the evenings there are plenty of bars with live music where you can while away some hours away before heading back to your hotel.

    Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

    Ho Chi Minh City feels like a capital – especially when compared with Hanoi, the current capital of Vietnam. This is mainly because it was the capital of Vietnam for a while before it was usurped by Hanoi. Nevertheless, Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon as it is also known) is a vibrant metropolis that will give you a great insight into modern Vietnamese culture. Be sure to take a trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels while you’re there and pay a visit to the War Remnants Museum for a bit of historical context to the city.

    Kandy, Sri Lanka

    Infinitely better than the sprawling mess that is Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, Kandy is by far the best city in Sri Lanka. Its number one attraction is the Temple of the Tooth, which has gained international fame for being reputed to contain within it a relic of the tooth of Buddha. However, there is plenty more here than just the temple. Visitors can spend their time picking out beautiful fabrics in the local markets or strolling around the sparkling Kandy Lake.

    Mumbai, India

    A complete world away from New Delhi – the capital of India – Mumbai is a slice of modernity in an otherwise traditional and spiritual country. While tuk tuks still whizz along the roads at quite an alarming speed, the chaos in Mumbai seems much more manageable than that of other large Indian cities. Home to the Bombay Stock Exchange, dozens of silver stores and a rocky coastline, your trip to India would incomplete without spending some time in Mumbai.

    Shanghai, China

    Nowhere in the world is as crazy as Shanghai. With 25 million people it is the most populous city in the world and the second you get there you will feel its unique energy. Highlights of this Chinese megacity are the Shanghai Tower, the Yu Garden and the Pudong skyline. The Bund is also a place worth visiting as it sits along the waterfront of the city and is generally considered to be the heart of Shanghai.

    It is very easy to visit a country in Europe and completely forget that there are other cities outside of the capital. But, you would be surprised just how much beauty and excitement can be found in some of the non-capital European cities. Hop on a train or a bus for a few hours and head out of the capital. You might just be amazed at what you find.

    Cambridge, England

    When tourists travel to England, they tend to beeline straight to London – and understandably so. It’s certainly one of the most exciting cities in Europe. But, there is a lot more to England than its chaotic capital.

    The highlight of visiting Cambridge is seeing its prestigious university, which travellers can visit and admire as they wander through the city. The best way to see the colleges of Cambridge University is to hop in a punt (a long flat boat that gets pushed along the water with a big stick) and take a tour along the river. Once that’s done, hit the cobbled streets in search of some gourmet food in one of the city’s numerous cafés and bistros.

    Munich, Germany

    Completely different to Berlin, Munich is more what you would expect from a German city. The most populous city in Bavaria, one of Germany’s states, Munich is teeming with impressive buildings and boasts a rich history.

    Every year, in October, Munich takes the global spotlight thanks to its Oktoberfest beer festival – one of the most popular festival in Europe. Beer halls throw open their doors to tourists and locals alike as hordes of people gather together to enjoy Bavaria’s finest beers. Yet, Munich isn’t just about beer. Surrounded by mountains and forests, there is plenty of natural beauty to soak up here as well.

    Venice, Italy

    Venice is often described as being the most beautiful city in Europe. You’ll have to see whether or not you agree when you travel there.     Everything about Barcelona is amazing. The people are chilled out and friendly, the food is incredible and the beaches are top notch. If you’re looking for a non-capital city break then there are definitely worse places in Europe you could choose. Spend your days here gorging on tapas or getting a culture fix by visiting the Gaudí museum or the Sagrada Familia. As the sun starts to set, order a jug of sangria and drink al fresco at one of the city’s trendy bars.
